Tour the Wadi Rum Desert
Lawrence Spring – Al Ramal Red Sand Dune – Abu Khasshaba – Um Fruth Rock Bridge
Wadi Rum, a 74.000 hectare desert, in the southern part of Jordan is a must see when visiting the country. As a popular filming location, many big productions such as Star Wards, Transformers, Dune & Aladdin were filmed here. Continue reading to know more about the must-see stops.
Via our accomodation, the Jamal Rum Camp, we opted for a day tour in the Wadi Rum desert. With a 4×4 Jeep we were picked up and started the day at 11.00. With three other tourists from the camp, we were seated in the open back of the car so that we were able to enjoy the amazing views during the ride.
There are a couple of stops along the way:
Lawrence Spring
This was the most disappointing stop of the day. It shows how commercialized Wadi Rum has become. What was supposed to be a beautiful small spring rising high up in the rock, was minimized by the amount of shops around that were trying to sell souvenirs. Nevertheless, we walked between the canyon and admired the high rocks. We ended with a tea before heading to the next stop.
Al Ramal Red Sand Dune
The brightly red coloured dune stands out in the wide desert. This is the most famous spot to get a 360 degrees view of the desert. Enjoy the view and make memorable pictures.
Abu Khasshaba Canyon
Our tour guide dropped us off at one of the entrances. From here we walked through the 4 meter high canyon which is sheltered by sandstone cliffs to provide shelter from the heat. Along the way you will find many desert trees and the occasional fig trees. Our tour guide picked us up at the other end of the canyon.
Um Fruth Rock Bridge
The bridge makes for a great photo opportunity. A massive stone slab balanced between two tall peaks. Make sure someone stays below to make a picture while you walk up to the rocky edge.
